The area around the village of Mirthios with several beaches, surrounded by hills and mountains, is very pleasant and varied.     The sandy beach near Preveli's monastery is just few kilometers away. The "Megalopotamos" stream is dammed up there by a natural barrier providing sweet water for an astonishing palm forest before flowing into the sea. It is possible to walk several hundred meters upstream where finally the path becomes more and more difficult. Except Preveli there are Preveli Beach further beaches like Ammoudi, Skinaria, Damnoni or SoudaBay each with their own charming charakter. The nearby village of Plakias is well reachable by car and by foot. There is nearly everything one may desire: shops of different kind, Taverns and Restaurants, car and bike rentals, touristic offices, taxi, diving school, pharmacy and doctor as well as post office and cash dispensers.   Plakias Bay Even decent nightlive exists thanks to several bars. The beachbar, by the way, usually doesn't close before sunrise. Very beautiful aspects of nature unfold close to the accommodation in Kotsiphou-Gorge. Except an old mill there are many caves and other surprises. Towards Sfakia there is e.g. Imbros Gorge with six km fairly good path.   footpath from Plakias to Mirthios Crete is a large island with a long history, fragments can even be found outside of the well-known archaeological sites. Who leaves the main roads with open eyes may be rewarded with best views and possibly even new friendships.
